L.A. Punk Rock Museum Show at Rubycon Records - December 17, 2022

Line-Up:  Beat Mistress, Nervous Gender Reloaded, Shimmer Bed

The revolving exhibit known as the L.A. Punk Rock Museum set up shop in Rubycon Records in Los Angeles + put on this fun show for their opening night.  Beat Mistress opened the event with a heavy tribal beat, setting a spell on the full-house audience gathered around.  I played medium length set of new material such as Scorpion + Tina with older songs from the Primal One album too.  While the older material is heavily tribal dreamy-style songs, the new material is sharper + edgier with underground street style lyrics set to tribal rhythms.

This was the first show I played in several years + while the excitement was palpable, I have to admit that I was very nervous to both play + debut the new songs.  Are my new songs going to go over as well as my old songs?  Would my playing be as smooth + dynamic as I had rehearsed it?  Or would my nerves get the better of me??  Luckily, I could sense the rapt attention, curiosity and love from the audience + focused on delivering a really good show for everyone there.  It turned into a great success for me--new songs went over well, old songs sounded great.  And I didn't drop a stick!

Nervous Gender Reloaded featured Edwin, vocalist/keyboardist from the original + notorious Nervous Gender art-punk band from back in the early days of L.A. punk rock.  This wild noise band performed at such well-known underground clubs such as the Masque + Hong Kong Cafe.  A real original punk survivor!  This new band incarnation pushed the limits of throbbing art noise rock just as the original version did, entertaining the audience with an intense performance that everybody enjoyed.  Watch for your chance to see this band if you enjoy crazed art noise rock.

Shimmer Bed is an effervescent, slightly psychedelic fuzz-rocking garage band that got the dancefloor going with both dancers + slammers bouncing off each other in front of the rapt audience.  They're everything you'd want in a garage band!  Big, fuzzy, shimmering rock energy kept us all rocking + we didn't want them to stop.  I dug the hell out of them.  Funny thing is they almost didn't play because the drummer forgot his kick drum pedal.  So I hooked him up with my drummer friend, Duley Toledo from Somos Mysteriosos, who just happened to have his pedal in his car!  He saved the day, or actually, the night!   Thanks, Duley!  And me, I was just happy to help out a fellow drummer.  Do see Shimmer Bed if you get the chance.  If you like fuzzy rocking garage rock, you will love them.

Thanks to Tequila Mockingbird + all the people who put together the L.A. Punk Rock Museum exhibits.  I always love going to see their classic punk memorabilia displays + this is the 2nd show I've played for them.  The 1st was many years ago at their Chinatown location, which is now a great venue called the Oracle (where Tequila now books + hosts Sunday nights).

Shout out to guys at Rubycon Records who provided the P.A., mixed vocals + were very helpful + cool.  They have alot of cool vinyl, stickers, etc. so if you're in the L.A. area at some point, drop in to Rubycon Records to check out some great underground music + see the L.A. Punk Museum exhibit which should be up thru Spring 2023.
